The statue was originally commissioned by the Central Electricity Board and placed at the entrance to Richborough Power Station. When the power station closed it was moved to Dover seafront near to the former National Coal Board offices. At the end of July 2010 it was relocated to its present position outside the entrance to Fowlmead Country Park adjacent to the Deal - Sandwich road (A258). Now a feature on the Miner's Way Trail, the statue commemorates the hard work and sacrifices made by Kent's coal miners.
