Sandwich Terns and Kentish Plovers regularly bred at Sandwich Bay and were described in 1787 by Dr John Latham, an eminent ornithologist. It was shot by fellow surgeon William Boys of Sandwich who sent the birds to Latham. An illustration of the Sandwich Tern was drawn by Latham's daughter and included in Collections for An History of Sandwich in Kent published by Boys in 1792.
